A significant part of the Taoiseach’s trip to Washington has been postponed.

A reception, celebrating 100 years of diplomatic relations between Ireland and America has been delayed because of Hurricane Milton. It was due to take place in the Rose Garden of the White House on Wednesday.

Taoiseach Simon Harris spoke with President Biden on Monday night, who asked that a planned reception be postponed because of the grave threat posed by the category 5 storm.

It's believed it was felt it would be inappropriate for the US president to be celebrating during one of the worst storms to hit the Florida region in 20 years. The hurricane is expected to make landfall on Wednesday with 280 km/h winds forecast.

Simon Harris will still travel to Washington on Tuesday, and will meet with Joe Biden in the White House on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Taoiseach says Simon Harris will proceed with all other parts of his visit to Washington.

Meanwhile, Tánaiste Micheál Martin has defending the visit in the midst of the United States' ongoing support for Israel.

"I think in the world of international diplomacy, we have to engage. Of course, the United States has been a good friend to Ireland.

"President Biden in particular has been a very good friend to Ireland in respect of Brexit and stood up in crucial moments during that period. So you don't forget that either.

"Diplomacy is about engaging with people across the world to try and bring these horrible situations to an end".
