Euro 2020 is being postponed for a year due to the coronavirus outbreak, UEFA has confirmed.

The European football governing body made the announcement following a series of conference calls with national associations today.

The tournament will now begin on June 11th, 2021 and will conclude on July 11th.

UEFA say their decision will help European countries complete their domestic leagues.

The association itself has moved into lockdown because of coronavirus, with only business-critical staff working from its headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, from yesterday evening onwards.

Following the video call today, the FAI said that Ireland’s semi-final play-off against Slovakia is now planned for a date between June 1st and 9th next year.

The four games to be hosted in Dublin are now planned for Aviva Stadium in the summer of 2021.

In addition, UEFA Women's EURO 2021, the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers planned for June 2021 and the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championships will all be rescheduled.

FAI Interim CEO Gary Owens said: “UEFA has made the right decision today in the interests of the health and well-being of football players, fans and staff alike.

“We support this decision and we look forward to working with all our stakeholders on reorganising UEFA EURO 2021 for Dublin next year."
