The country's environmental watchdog says clearer policies are needed around climate action.
This damning report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), says Ireland's future propensity and health are threatened unless we do better to protect the environment.
The State of the Environment report, which is published every four years, found despite progress Ireland is still playing 'catch up', with one step forward and two back.
"For too long we have merely aimed to ‘get by’, aspiring to only minimum standards – in many instances, we don’t even reach those.
EPA Programme Manager, and one of the report's editors, Andy Fanning, says radical change is needed to protect and secure the future.
"To make that transformation, it's a generational challenge, but what we're saying is there are things that can help us.
"We've highlighted, we need to scale up our infrastructural investment across al sectors, energy, water, waste, transport, and we also need a policy position on the environment, so all policies align to allow us to get to the environment that we all need and deserve to protect ourselves".
