The UN is warning the earth is on course for three degrees of warming - which has been described as "hellish".
The report has been released ahead of COP28 which starts next week in the UAE.
Multiple temperature records have been set globally in 2023 - including in Ireland - where Met Eireann recently recorded highs for October.
A report has found that current emission-cutting policies will achieve a three-degree warming of the planet.
There's an international agreement to restrain that increase above pre-industrial levels to 1.5 degrees - with scientists saying more severe and adverse weather conditions can be expected.
Temperatures so far are measured to be 1.4 degrees above the target.
The study says to achieve 1.5 degrees - there must be a 42% reduction in emissions - which is equivalent to the output of the five worst emitters - China, USA, India, Russia and Japan.
