The National Public Health Emergency Team has recommended that Dublin should be moved to Level 3 of coronavirus restrictions.
That would mean people in the capital can't leave their county from this weekend, cultural venues closing and capacity limits introduced for weddings and funerals.
Some additional measures - such as colleges being told not to hold in-person classes - may also be introduced to stop the virus spreading in Dublin.
The NPHET recommendations are being discussed by a government steering group this evening before cabinet makes a decision tomorrow.
It comes as almost half of the covid-19 cases reported today were discovered in Dublin.
