Democrats in the US are accusing Donald Trump of 'openly calling for ethnic cleansing' over his plans for Gaza.

The US President has said he wants America to 'take over' and 'own' Gaza.

He has also proposed relocating Palestinians to a "beautiful area" where they can "resettle permanently".

However, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Palestinian authority have all rejected his suggestion to relocate its two-million citizens to Egypt and Jordan. Hamas has described the idea as 'absurd' and 'ridiculous'.

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Harris, said displacing Palestinian civilians would be in "clear contradiction" to UN Security Council resolutions.

Speaking on his way into Cabinet on Wednesday morning, Minister Harris says international attention should be focused on supporting the people of Gaza instead.

"It's very clear the direction of travel here. We need a two-state solution. The people of Palestine and the people of Israel, both have a right to live in states safely, side by side, that's where the focus has to be.

"Any idea of displacing the people of Gaza anywhere else would be in clear contradiction with UN Security Council resolutions".

Simon Harris said the US Government needs to clarify where it stands following the President's comments overnight.

"I always adopt the approach, when it comes to the US administration to judge them based on what they do, and not what they say.

"I think it would be important that the United States would clarify the comments of the President overnight because, the international community has put a huge effort now into bringing about a ceasefire. That ceasefire came much too late".

Donald Trump made the comments during a visit of the Israeli Prime Minister to Washington on Tuesday.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump proposed turning Gaza into a holiday destination.

"I don't think people should be going back to Gaza. I think that Gaza has been very unlucky for them. They lived like you're living in hell.

"Gaza is not a place for people to be living.

"We have an opportunity to do something that could be phenomenal, and I don't want to be cute, I don't want to be a wise guy, but the Riviera of the Middle East, this could be something".

Mr Trump has repeatedly described the Gaza Strip as a 'demolition site' and claims its redevelopment would create thousands of jobs.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, thinks it's an idea worth exploring.

"He has a different idea. I think it's something that could change history. And it's worthwhile really pursuing this avenue".
