A body representing doctors is welcoming the news that free GP care is to be extended to all children under the age of 5 in tomorrow's budget.
The National Assocation of General Practitioners is at odds with the larger Irish Medical Organisation which has questioned the initiative - dismissing it as a political stunt.
The IMO has criticised the move, saying relatively well off children will get the benefit at a time when thousands of needy people are losing medical cards.
But the NAGP says, if properly funded, the measure will be visionary - and on a par with Noel Brown's Mother and Child Scheme in the 1950s.
