An infectious disease specialist is warning this Easter Weekend could be Ireland's Cheltenham if coronavirus restrictions are ignored by the public.
There are now 6,074 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ireland.
Dublin has the most cases, while Carlow and Leitrim have the least.
Sadly, 235 people have lost their lives.
The number of clusters has risen to 299, with a third of those in nursing homes.
Infectious disease physician at St Vincent’s hospital, Dr Paddy Mallon, says the next few days are vital:
He feels the Cheltenham racing festival should not have gone ahead:
“They are now looking back at that saying it was probably one of the seminal events in the UK that led to the widespread dissemination of this infection,” he said.
“We are at a similar scenario this weekend.
“If people in the population centres of the east decide to take off this weekend, then this weekend will be our Cheltenham and we will be sitting here in two weeks with an absolute disaster."
