Discussions Continue At COP28 Over Future Of Fossil Fuels
Discussions continue at COP28 today on the text of an agreement on the future of fossil fuels.
It had been expected that a phase out of their use to limit climate change would be agreed - however the first draft referenced just a reduction in their use.
The European Union group - chaired by Green Party leader Eamon Ryan - has threatened to pull out of talks if there isn't changes made to the text.
COP28 Director General Majid Al Suwaidi denies there's an attempt to water down the potential agreement:
" To get the most ambitious outcome possible - that's our singular goal.
"We're focused on getting the most ambitious outcome possible and our COP Presidency will do whatever is needed to make sure that we get that outcome today.
"And we're focused on that and I think that we can work to deliver that."
Pacific island nations - bearing the brunt of the effects of climate change - are angry at the current wording of the deal on fossil fuels.
A Minister for the Marshall Islands says they will not go quietly to their watery graves.
It's estimated that nation needs 32 billion euro to salvage its islands from global warming.
