A decryption key has been made available to Irish authorities that may help to restore the HSE's computer systems.
The ransomware gang behind the cyber attack has provided the key, but the government says it's still assessing if it's genuine.
In a statement, it says "A detailed technical process to ensure the integrity of this decryption tool is being carried out by the NCSC and private contractors. This is to ensure that this tool would support restoration of our systems and rather than cause further harm."
However, it says it's an 'encouraging development', but it reiterates it won't pay any ransom to the criminal gang.
The government says it's to be emphasised that it "has not paid a ransom and will not pay a ransom in respect of this crime. This has been the firm position of the Government from the outset and it will continue to maintain that position."
