Decisions On Climate This Decade Will Be Felt For Generations

More action is needed by the State to meet its legally binding emissions targets.

A report released today is looking at the state of climate change in Ireland.

Irish people emit more greenhouse gases per person than the EU average.

Ireland's Climate Change Assessment says 16 of the 20 warmest years in recorded history in Ireland have happened since 1990.

It says more needs to be done on reducing Ireland's emissions, including an immediate reduction in the energy sector which generates using 86% fossil fuels.

The study says humans have created a change in the climate which is already impacting today.

It says that every action in preventing emissions matters - while every bit of warming will increase the impacts substantially for Ireland.

The report calls for Ministers and the State to take actions to rapidly reach net-zero emissions.

It says decisions taken in this decade to cut emissions and reduce the impact of global warming will be felt for generations to come.
