Independent Senator David Norris has lashed out at Fine Gael's deputy director of elections, Meath East TD Regina Doherty after a war of words erupted in the Seanad over its abolition.
He accused Deputy Doherty of "talking through her fanny" on the issue.
The outspoken senator also referred to Ms Doherty's remarks about the forthcoming referendum on the abolition of the Seanad as the "Regina Monologues".
The Jobs and Innovation Minister Richard Bruton has also come under fire in the Seanad, after he claimed that scrapping it could save the taxpayer as much as 20 million Euro a year.
Fianna Fail Senator Mary White accused the Minister of issuing a press release that was "like propaganda from Hitler".
She said Minister Bruton and Deputy Regina Doherty had no right to criticise senators at "ineffective".
Ms White demanded that the Minister come into the Seanad "and tell the truth - that this Senate does not cost 20 million Euro a year".
