The Dáil's passed legislation allowing Bord Gais to be split up and sold.
TDs voted by 83 votes to 44 to pass the Gas Regulation Bill.
The bill will split Bord Gais into two companies, with the consumer business sold off in a deal that could raise up to €1.5 billion.
The bill now goes to the Seanad for its consideration.
