Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton, has pledged the fine will be strictly enforced:
"This is to ensure vulnerable road users, so pedestrians, cyclists, those with a buggy or people in wheelchairs."
The Dublin Cycling Campaign has welcomed the updated rules.
But spokesperson for the group Una Morrison says it doesn't matter if the fines are "forty, eighty or a milliom euro" if the rules aren't enforced.
