Coronavirus: 1,000 New Cases And Three Further Deaths In Republic

There have been 1,000 new coronavirus cases and three further deaths in the Republic.

It brings the total number of cases to date to 47,427, and the number of deaths to 1,841.

Of today's cases, 254 were in Dublin, 102 in Meath, 88 in Cork, 81 in Cavan, 75 in Galway and the remaining 400 cases are spread across 20 counties.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “Case numbers are continuing to rise. Right now, we need everyone to cut their social contacts to an absolute minimum.

"Every time you physically interact with another person, you are providing an opportunity for the virus to spread.”

As of this afternoon, there were 246 COVID-19 cases in Irish hospitals, including 30 patients in ICU.

The national 14-day incidence rate now stands at 217 per 100,000 population.

Today's figures come after NPHET recommended that the entire country be moved to level five restrictions.
