Concerns Over The Future Of Stephen's Green With Metrolink
The OPW has warned building MetroLink can not be at the expense of Ireland's national heritage.
At an oral hearing on the project, the state body raised concerns about plans to remove more than 60 trees and relocate monuments for a metro station at St. Stephen's Green.
It says it would amount to the partial demolition of the historic park, or at least make changes from its current format.
Virginia Teehan from the Heritage Council says the OPW are making valid points;
"Over four million people use the green every, every year.
"It's one of the few parks in the centre of Dublin, and it's a very attractive amenity.
"So I think the protection of both the historic nature of the, of the place itself, it's nine hectares, and also the public amenity is an important consideration."
