The State Examinations Commission has insisted the Junior and Leaving Cert exams will not be marked by a computer.
The Commission says reports suggesting that a new online marking system will see students' exams corrected by machines are 'misleading'.
Under the system being rolled out from this year, Leaving and Junior Cert exam scripts will be scanned electronically.
However, the marking process itself will then be carried out by examiners - just on a computer rather than the traditional paper-based system.
In a statement, the SEC has clarified that online marking involves scanned images of examination scripts being marked by examiners on a computer, not by a computer.
The computer is not marking any work.
The Commission says all students work is seen and marked by an examiner, as has always been the case.
