Community Traumatized After Garda Car Rammed in Dublin

Public Order Unit Being Stood Up.

The Justice Minister Helen McEntee says any assault on gardaí is 'unacceptable' - and a joyriding incident in Dublin last night will be investigated.

The comment was made after a garda car was rammed in Cherry Orchard.

Garda commissioner Drew Harris has described the incident as 'disgraceful' and very concerning.  He confirmed the Public Order Unit is being made available.

Video footage on social media shows a group of people cheering when a car collides with the garda vehicle.

Sinn Fein Councillor Daithi Doolan has condemned the behaviour and says the community has been 'abandoned' by Minister McEntee and senior Garda management.

He's slammed the Garda Commissioner, who previously said there aren't any 'no-go' zones for officers in Dublin.

Councillor Doolan said the people of Cherry Orchard are terrorised and in tears over the incident.

Mr Doolan, who is the Chair of the local Joint Policing Committee, claims the community is being traumatised by a minority.

"They're terrorised!" he said. "People were ringing me in tears long before anyone watched those videos, they're frustrated. But this is going on night after night after night, going back weeks and months."

"I was up there in January and witnessed it first hand, I also bore the brunt of an attack standing with residents."

"Now I hope that video of last night's incident lands on the desk of the commissioner."

Gardai at Ballyfermot Station are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
