4,181 covid cases were confirmed here yesterday, while 682 people were in public hospitals last night - the highest since February 21st.
Dr Tony Holohan says closing hospitality at midnight sends "an important signal" to the public.
The NPHET boss says the move, along with the reintroduction of the work-from-home policy shows the public that this is "a serious situation with serious impact on public health".
He also said it highlights the impact of rising case numbers on the healthcare system.
