Christmas can be saved if the right measures are taken, according to public health officials.
NPHET is warning that cases of Covid-19 could exceed 1,000 a day in a matter of weeks and says we are now in a period of exponential growth.
611 cases were confirmed yesterday, along with 5 deaths.
The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again today and says it's deeply concerned by the rate of transmission since it last met on Sunday.
People are being urged to "radically" reduce their social contacts in order to slow the spread of the virus.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan says that they will give specific consideration to Christmas: 'At various stages in the year different event and different circumstances create environments that we have to give specific consideration to. We will give specific consideration to Christmas. We hope we're not in a situation where we're having to advise the population that they can't meet other households or travel outside their home'.
Chair of NPHET's Modelling Advisory Group, Philip Nolan, says: 'We can still save Christmas I presume if we do the right thing over the next three weeks'.
