Christmas And New Year Road Safety Campaign Starts Today
This year's Christmas and New Year road safety campaign is underway.
It started at 7am on Friday morning and runs until 7am on the 4th of January.
Gardaí say they'll be targeting speeding, mobile phone use, and drink and drug driving.
172 people have been killed in road collisions so far this year, and for every death an average of 10 people are seriously injured.
Assistant Garda Commissioner, Paula Hillman, says they want to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on the roads.
"We want everyone to get to where they're going safely and have that time with their family.
"We don't want to be coming to people's houses to give them devastating news that they've lost a loved one or someone is seriously injured.
"Our annual Christmas and New Year road safety campaign starting at 7am and runs through to 7am on the 4th of January".
Commissioner Hillman, is urging people to think before the get behind the wheel the morning after a night out.
"Last Christmas over the New Year period, we arrested just over 720 people, more than 100 were arrested the morning after between 6am to 2pm.
"People do go out and have big nights out over Christmas and the New Year. People need to be mindful of what to do the next morning, and make sure that you're not one of those people detected the morning after".
