China has formally eased its one-child policy - which has been in place since the 1970s.
Under new rules, couples will be allowed two children if one of the parents is an only child.
Officials are worried the strict controls are undermining economic growth and contributing to a rapidly ageing population.
The country will also abolish re-education through labour camps.
