Health experts are warning that children should only be eating one medium sized Easter egg over the whole weekend.
Irish kids will eat as many as 5 million chocolate eggs over the long weekend, with the average child expected to get four eggs.
But one chocolate egg contains 23 teaspoons of sugar, almost four times a child's recommended daily intake.
Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, Safefood Ireland's chief nutritionist Joana da Silva says parents should tell relatives to buy other gifts instead of chocolate.
A report last week found that Irish shoppers had already forked out 15 million euro on Easter Eggs.
