A child that found a loaded gun in West Dublin yesterday is just 5 years old.
It's understood the gun was found close to where a man was shot last weekend.
The child came upon the gun near Castlecurragh Park in Mulhuddart at around five o'clock in the evening.
The gun was thrown from a car which was being pursued by Gardai.
An investigation is underway.
Local councillor Kieran Dennison says it's the latest shocking incident in the area: 'It was only a matter of time before children stumbled across a gun in that area because there are so many guns that are involved in the recent dispute between these gangs in Dublin West. It's lucky that the children involved had the good sense not to handle the gun and to call the Guards who reacted so quickly'
This fully loaded firearm was found by a five year old child in west Dublin this evening. It was thrown from a car being chased by Gardai. Only through the grace of God we aren’t dealing with the death of an innocent child. More @IrishSunOnline pic.twitter.com/0AmAUwkhwM
