Irish shoppers are spending over €470 extra per year on groceries, as they chase supermarket discounts.
A new survey by Aldi found over 45% of consumers believe deals like 'buy-one-get-one-free' don't lead to savings but actually cause them to spend more.
Two for one, spend €50 to save €10 or buy one, get the second half price were just some of the offers spotted in stores.
But according to research, these discounts are actually costing people money, including these shoppers:
30% of respondents said it leads to throwing out food.
Odile Le Bolloch from the EPA’s food waste team has these tips to avoid food waste:
"Don't buy stuff that's going to go off quickly, or if you are then make sure when you do bring it home split it up and put some in the freezer."
More than 40% of shoppers also said these offers led to buying things they don’t want and don’t believe they saved money overall.
Dermott Jewell from the Consumers Association says loyalty means nothing at checkout:
"Any element of the pricing structure in a shop is focused on bringing you in, holding onto you, and trying to keep you as a customer."
The research found shoppers could be spending up to €477 extra every year, chasing these so-called discounts.
