The chief executive of EirGrid says he'd have no problem living beside a pylon.
Fintan Slye says there are no health concerns from living beside a tower carrying overhead power lines.
He's told an Oireachtas committee that putting new power lines underground would make the process much more expensive.
But he says exposure to electricity at pylons is perfectly safe:
He also says it would be significantly more expensive to put power lines underground.
He says putting more than 20km underground is not feasible with an 'AC' line - and EirGrid would need to pursue a HVDC line instead.
This, he said, would demand the construction of mammoth power stations along the route to convert the power into the AC format used in homes and business.
