The government is patting the backs of School Climate Strikers with one hand while blocking a bill that would tackle climate change with the other.
That’s according to People Before Profit which is calling for its Climate Emergency Bill to be passed that would end fossil fuel extraction.
The bill was due before a Select Committee today but was blocked at the last minute after a 'money message' was issued on it.
A money message can only be applied to opposition bills. It means it would need public funding and can’t move forward to the next stage unless the government approves.
People Before Profit says the government is being lobbied by fossil fuel companies and isn’t taking climate change seriously after its recent promises.
PBP TD Brid Smith says 'if last week we could spend €10 million protection Donald Trump, what is a quarter of a million euro to spend on climate change, the single biggest challenge we face'.
A number of protests are taking place outside the Dail today with the slogans 'Don't Kill The Bill' and 'Keep Fossil Fuels In The Ground'.
TUESDAY 11th June join #SavetheClimateBill protest to save People Before Profit's Climate Emergency Measures Bill, 5:30pm, Dáil Éireann! #ClimateEmergency Bill would ban issuing of Oil & Gas Exploration Licences off Irish coast. #KeepitintheGround
