Cabinet Ministers are considering lowering the age of consent at their final meeting before Christmas.
Currently the age at which you can consent to sex is 17 - but an Oireachtas Committee recommended in 2006 that the age be reduced to 16.
It's understood that the Justice Minister has not given a recommendation on whether to lower the age of consent or not.
