Breakdancing Could Be An Olympic Sport In 2024

Breakdancing could become an Olympic sport soon.

Organisers of the 2024 Paris games have written to the International Olympic Committee to propose its addition to the line-up.

Breakdancing made its debut as part of the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires last year.

Sergei Chernyshev - aka Bumblebee - from Russia won gold in the boys' event, with Japan's Ramu Kawai winning the girls' title.

In total, organisers in France are proposing four sports - breakdancing, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing.

Breakdancing hasn't been featured before, but the other three sports are part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics programme.

"Urban and sustainable games"

Paris organisers say the proposed sports "embody youth, elite performance, spectacular experiences and inclusiveness".

They explain: "Paris 2024 has emphasised its goal of creating spectacular, urban and sustainable games.

These will not only provide a fitting showcase for athletic performance, but also engage young people and the wider public through lifestyle sports.

The proposals will now be considered by the International Olympics Committee, before a final decision next year.

According to the Olympic Channel, Paris organisers had also been lobbied to include squash, billiard sports and chess.
