"Brat" has been revealed as Collins Dictionary Word of the Year.

The term was coined by singer Charli XCX for her sixth studio album released in June this year.

The record inspired a movement on social media and was even referenced by the US Vice President Kamala Harris, during her presidential campaign.

Collins says the word 'brat' was newly defined this year, and has come to refer to 'a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude’.

The term has been described as one of the most talked about words of 2024, which became a 'cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and ‘brat summer’ established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life'.

"Era" has also made the list - inspired by Taylor Swift's record-breaking tour.

Other words shortlisted for the 2024 word of the year, include 'delulu', short for “deluded”, meaning someone is unrealistic in one’s ideas, expectations, or the problems facing us.

'Brainrot', which describes the inability to think clearly caused by 'excessive consumption of low-quality online content', also featured on the shortlist.

'Looksmaxxing' which is when someone attempts to maximise the attractiveness of one's physical appearance.
