Boris Johnson has announced his intention to resign as British Prime Minister.

He says he will stay in the role until a new leader of the Conservative Party is elected in the coming weeks.

It just took over 50 resignations from his Government this week, two others telling him to resign and a sacking for him to realise the jig is up.
The Taoiseach Michael Martin has said the resignation of Johnson is "an opportunity to return to the true spirit of partnership and mutual respect."
Boris Johnson's government had threatened to break international law and override parts of the Northern Ireland protocol which prevents a hard border in Ireland.
