Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a newly born baby in Cork city.
They were alerted after the emergency services were called to a house in the Friar's Walk area of the city this afternoon.
The newly born baby boy was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to Cork University Hospital.
A post-mortem will be carried out on his remains tomorrow.
Gardai are awaiting the results of the post mortem before deciding what course their investigation will take.
In the meantime, the house where the baby's body was found remains sealed off.
The baby's mother was also taken by ambulance to hospital where she is receiving medical treatment.
