A Bishop in the west of Ireland says he's hopeful churches will be able to open for Christmas following comments made by the Taoiseach.

Micheal Martin has said he thinks Irish churches will be open to celebrate mass in Christmas week.

The Taoiseach has also called on people to adhere to level 5 restrictions for the next 3 weeks so we can enjoy a meaningful Christmas.

Religious celebrations are not allowed under levels 3, 4 or 5, but they would be permitted with limited attendance under level 2 restrictions.

Bishop of Elphin Kevin Doran hopes these efforts will allow masses to resume in December:

"We obviously recognise that this is a very anxious time for everyone in the country"

"For us, we're very hopeful that with all the efforts being made, including in our churches, that we will be able to open for mass for the Christmas season."
