Average speed cameras are being launched on the M7 motorway.
The cameras are to be put up between Junction 26-Nenagh (West) and Junction 27-Birdhill in Co. Tipperary.
They cover both directions and will be Ireland’s first mainline motorway based system.
Drivers in Dublin will be familiar with the cameras as an identical system has been operational within the Port Tunnel since the middle of 2017.
It has been hugely successful in improving driver behaviour as the number of drivers caught going over the speed limit of 80 km/h has dropped from about 55% to just over 10%.
The installation of equipment at the M7 sites got underway yesterday.
Drivers will know at least 10 days in advance of when the system will go live.
Last year, there were a total of 357 speeding detections made in the vicinity of Junction 26 and Junction 27.
