Gardaí and members of the Armed Support Unit were called to Renmore Barracks in Galway last night after reports of a serious assault.
The Defence Forces say shots were fired by on duty Defence Forces personnel, saying they resoinded to "the immediate threat."
I condemn the violent attack at Renmore Barracks last night.
I commend the members of the Defence Forces on duty at the time, whose intervention was critical.
Our thoughts are with the Defence Forces member injured in the attack.— Micheál Martin (@MichealMartinTD) August 16, 2024
An army chaplain, in his 50's, had suffered a number of stab wounds during the incident and was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.
A young man in his teen was restrained by members of the defence forces and was subsequently arrested by Gardaí.
He's being held at a Garda Station in the North Western Region.
The scene is currently being preserved and a technical exam will be carried out later today.
