The justice minister's confirmed plans to hold a referendum on the role of women in the home.

Alan Shatter says he's putting together a group to recommend a change in the constitution ahead of an eventual referendum.

The current constitution requires the State to endeavour that mothers should not be financially obliged to take a job that neglects their "duties in the home".

Earlier this year the Constitutional Convention recommended that this be changed - concluding that the original wording from 1936 didn't reflect the modern status of the family.

This afternoon Minister Shatter said the government would accept the recommendation - and get ready for a referendum.

The same group will also look at the other two ideas agreed by the convention - to include a specific clause on gender equality, and to change the constitution so that it uses gender-neutral language.

It's expected to return its report by the end of October 2014, so that referendums could be held at some point in 2015.
