Another Record Level Of Homelessness In Ireland
14,760 people were registered as homeless in September - including more than 4,500 children.
It is yet another record for the numbers in emergency accommodation.
The total is 15% higher than September 2023 with figures showing the rate of increase registered as homeless is increasing again.
The State's figures do not include the so-called hidden homeless, women in refuge centres, asylum seekers, refugees or rough sleepers.
Speaking ahead of the released of the figures - Housing Minister, Darragh O’Brien, says his department is working to prevent people from entering homelessness:
"One measure that we've taken that has been really successful is the purchase of homes with tenants and situ unsecured tendencies have tendencies where people have been on the housing list where the landlord is selling.
"Last year we bought over 1,800 homes.
"We'll do over 1,500 at least this year, and what that does is end an unsecured tenancy, converts a HAP tenancy into a social housing tenancy, and adds to our social housing stock."
Housing and homeless charities have described today's figures as "dire", "shocking" and "depressing, while each have urged people voting in a General Election to consider the housing and homeless situation before casting a ballot.
