Nearly 7,300 people have been the victims of domestic abuse so far this year, according to new Garda figures.
The figure for all of 2020 is on course to be at least 6 per cent higher than last year.
78 per cent are women and 22 per cent are men.
The Gardai say domestic abuse can be physical, sexual, financial or psychological.
It's committed by a family member or an intimate partner.
Over 2,100 women have been domestically abused in Dublin this year and nearly 500 in Cork.
Other areas with high numbers include Limerick, Louth, Galway, Laois/Offaly and Kildare.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee says combating domestic abuse is a key priority for her department.
