An ambitious €37 billion plan, that will see faster trains and new rail lines being opened, is being launched today.

The All-Island vision includes creating new train routes to the North Midlands and North West by 2050.

At least hourly services between cities and connecting Dublin, Belfast and Shannon airports with the train network is also proposed.

The Western Rail Corridor between Claremorris and Athenry, as well the line connecting Wexford to Waterford would be reinstated.

If the recommendations of the review are plublished there are plans to have 700,000 more people living with 5km of a railway station, with 80% of the train journeys being completed using electric energy.

Speaking about the launch of the report, the Transport Minister Eamon Eyan said it "provides a long-term vision and series of recommendations for the sustainable development of the rail network on the island."
