More than 513,000 people are now on some form of unemployment benefit.

It means more people are now claiming unemployment benefits than at the height of the crash.

The latest figures include 283,037 people who are claiming the COVID-19 pandemic unemployment payment.

77% of this number are over the age of 25.

Meanwhile, 25,104 people were on the Temporary COVID-19 Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Minister for Employment Affairs Regina Doherty said the figures were a "stark reminder" of how much has changed in the space of a few weeks.

The Minister said "When the last Live Register figures were published, in February, we recorded a further fall in the numbers and we were still talking about being technically at full employment. The COVID emergency has completely up-ended that narrative. The crucial challenge for the Government is that we don’t let what is a temporary health emergency become a permanent economic crisis."
