It's exactly 50 years since humans walked on the moon.
Events are taking place later to mark the milestone.
While on the surface, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin collected samples, stuck up a United States flag, and spoke to US President Richard Nixon.
The pair then embarked on a two-hour spacewalk before having to return to Earth.
Upon stepping onto the moon, Neil Armstrong uttered a few famous words: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
It was indeed a giant leap for mankind but it also heralded a new age of design and invention.
Many of the ground-breaking technologies used by scientists in the Apollo missions and other space exploration projects are still used in everyday life on Earth.
Here are several space inventions that are particularly out of this world..
1. During the Apollo moon landings, NASA teamed up with Black & Decker to invent battery-powered tools for drilling and taking rock samples in space. The same motor design used on the 1969 moon landing led to the creation of the Dustbuster.
