47 people are now known to have died following an explosion at a chemical plant in eastern China.

More than 600 people are receiving treatment following Thursday afternoon's blast at the industrial estate in Yancheng.

The explosion was so powerful that it triggered a small earthquake.

As a result, a number of factory buildings were knocked down, and the power of the explosion shattered the windows of homes a few kilometres away.

According to the South China Morning Post, Tianjiayi Chemical which was founded in 2007, has received six government penalties in the past over waste management and air pollution.

Authorities who are investigating the cause of the accident said an unspecified number of people were taken into police custody.
