4,000 new Irish citizens naturalised

There's been emotional scenes as Ireland's newest citizens were sworn in at the Convention Centre in Dublin today.

Around four thousand people from 20 different countries will be naturalised by the end of the day.

These ceremonies first began in June 2011 and since then around 50 thousand people have become Irish citizens.

Some 3,800 people will take part in four separate ceremonies at the Convention Centre today.

Each group takes an Oath of Fidelity before receiving a certificate of naturalisation all ahead of a rendition of the national anthem.

The Minister For Justice addressed Ireland's newest citizens - he said becoming an Irish citizen gives people a sense of permanency and belonging:

Among those being naturalised today is Todayfm's Alison Curtis who moved to Ireland from Canada in 1999..
