Four in 10 Irish adults have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime.
The CSO carried out this survey of people who were randomly selected.
The figures show a big difference between sexes - 52% of women experienced violence - while for men it was 28%.
Other findings included six times more women experienced non-consensual sex than men, while around 80% of those who experienced sexual violence knew the person who did it.
