British intelligence suggests the Russian advance on Kyiv has made little progress in the last 24 hours - despite increasing artillery strikes.
But Kim Sengupta from the London Independent is in Kyiv and says initial optimism that Ukrainian forces were holding the capital city, is now fading
He described the mood in the capital as "one of deep apprehension".
"There was a certain amount of optimism that, after 6 days of attacks, Kyiv was still standing,"
"But that was just the first phase of the war. The second phase, the much deadlier one, is about to begin."
TDs Will Debate Motion On Russia Today
Back at home, TDs will today call for Vladimir Putin to reverse his decision to recognise the 'so-called independence' of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The government's motion will also call on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
It also commits 10 million euro in aid to the Ukraine Humanitarian Response Plan.
