Almost one third of drivers admit to checking their phone while driving.
The study by Aviva, found those aged 25 and 44 were most likely to use their phones behind the wheel, with 40% of that age group admitting to it.
Checking directions or looking at maps were the most common reasons for people to look at their phone while driving.
Of the drivers who said they use their phone while driving, 38% check text messages, 35% send texts, 30% send voice notes, and 14% looked at social media.
Half of those who use their phones when driving will only do so on hands-free, while 4% say that they will always pull over if they need to use the phone for any reason.
The research of 1,000 people also found that 49% of drivers have at some stage worn inappropriate footwear when driving.
Almost 1 in 4 (24%) admitted to wearing flip flops while driving, 17% have worn slippers, 15% have been in bare feet.
13% have worn platform boots or shoes and the same percentage have worn wellies.
Other inappropriate driving footwear included 8% who have worn stilettos, and 2% who have driven while wearing a foot or ankle cast.
Aviva says driving in flip flops or sliders is illegal in some European countries, including Germany, France, and Spain.
