Gardai are continuing to question a man in connection with what they believe was a plan by an organised criminal gang to smuggle guns into the country.
The operation began when officers from Revenue's Customs Service in Cork detected two firearms and a quantity of ammunition, imported from the US, at a courier depot.
Gardai raided a number of houses in the Whites Cross area of Cork city yesterday and arrested a 28 year old man.
The two guns have been sent for forensic analysis by ballistics experts in Dublin but Gardai don't believe they were used in the commission of any offences in Ireland.
