There is a need for greater education and understanding of self harm.

That's the view of St Patrick's Mental Health Services, who along with Pieta House, are aiming to highlight the issue as part of Self-Injury Awareness Day.

Recent figures show there was a 23 percent rise in the number of self harm cases since 2017.

While there's been a 21 percent increase in cases of self harm among 10 to 24 year olds between 2007 and 2017.

Director of Services at St Patrick's Mental Health Services, Tom Maher, says parent's have a huge role to play in helping tackle the issue: 'It's important that parents learn about self harming behaviour so that if they see it in their own children, they can deal with it as early as possible.'
