228 Children Awaiting For Spinal Surgeries
The average wait for what's described as 'non-complex' spinal surgeries in children is four months.
Children's Health Ireland has issued an update on the system, saying there are 228 patients on the waiting list.
137 of those children are waiting for a date for their surgery to be carried out.
123 spinal procedures were carried out in the first three months of the year - while in the same timeframe, 144 children were added to the waiting list.
Earlier this week HIQA has published a damning report into the use of unauthorised springs in spinal surgeries at Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
The health watchdog found the implantation of the unregulated metal springs in three children with scoliosis was an attempt to replicate an experimental technique still under investigation at a hospital in another country.
Children’s Health Ireland - which operates the hospital - says it’s “deeply sorry” to the families involved - while the body chair Jim Browne announced his resignation.
