200 Parents Holding Overnight Protest At Leinster House For Special Education Places

Parents protesting outside Leinster House say they’re fighting every day for basic rights for their children.

As many as 200 people are taking part in a sleepout outside the building, calling for the introduction of appropriate school places for every child with additional needs.

They also want the Department of Education to begin collecting data to understand how many children are affected by the issue.

The Education Minister Helen McEntee says plans need to be made now to ensure there are enough school places for children with special education needs in September.

Helen McEntee has directed the National Council for Special Education to put these plans in place, as parents continue to raise concerns over gaps in services.

Autism campaigner Adam Harris said parents and their children shouldn’t have to fight for their constitutional right to education.
